Update 16: safer, chattier, and a fresh coat of paint

Version 16, 2026-10-07

Chat

  • Threads: reply to a message in a thread to keep busy channels readable (⋯ → Reply in a thread).
  • Polls: type /poll to ask a question with answers, a deadline and live results.
  • Send later: right-click the send button to schedule a message. Reminders: ⋯ → Remind me on any message.
  • Inbox: one place for every @mention and reply, your saved messages, and what's coming later.
  • Saved messages: ⋯ → Save for later.
  • Search filters: from:name, in:channel, has:link, has:image, has:file, has:poll, before:, after: and during: dates.
  • Link previews: the title, description and picture of shared links, fetched by The Hub so sites don't see who's reading. Off with Settings → Appearance → link images.
  • Edit history: click (edited) to see what a message said before (its author and moderators).
  • Notifications per space and channel: every message, only mentions, or nothing, and mute for a while. Quiet hours in Settings → Notifications.

Safety

  • Two-factor sign-in with an authenticator app, and one-time recovery codes (Settings → Data and privacy).
  • Message recovery key: a recovery phrase that brings your encrypted messages back on a new device, even if you lost all the others.
  • Report a message, a person or a plugin. Space moderators get a Reports tab.
  • AutoMod: spaces can block words, links and spam, and warn, mute or time out automatically.
  • New member verification: spaces can ask for an older account, a waiting time, or two-factor sign-in before people talk.
  • Plugins run in a sandbox and ask for permission before they read or send messages. Plugin authors: see the updated guide.
  • Slow down: clear limits on uploads, sign-in attempts, friend requests, reactions, invites and bots stop spam.
  • Status page at the-hub.coffee/status.html, and crashes are now reported to us automatically (no personal data).

Spaces and voice

  • Invite links that expire or work a few times, with how many people joined with each (Space settings → Invites).
  • Welcome screen and rules for any space, and roles members pick themselves (Roles → Members can pick it themselves).
  • Soundboard: spaces upload short sounds; play them from the call bar for everyone in the room.
  • Screen share quality: pick the resolution, frame rate and video codec in Settings → Voice and video, and choose whether to share sound each time.

Look and feel

  • New badges: every badge redrawn in one style, and seasonal badges: open The Hub during an event to keep that year's badge.
  • More motion: tabs, spaces and panels slide in, menus fade out, badges pop, and the logo comes alive when you point at it.
  • About in Settings: your version, updates, links, and the new terms, privacy policy and licenses.
  • Your user ID moved from your profile to Settings → About.

Update 15: groups, and a livelier Hub

Version 15, 2026-10-07

New features

  • Group conversations: message up to 9 people at once. Press + next to Direct messages and pick a few people, or press Add people in any conversation. Name the group, add people, and the owner can remove them; anyone can leave.
  • Groups are end-to-end encrypted once everyone in them has opened The Hub, like direct messages.
  • Find people as you type: the new-message picker searches your friends and the people in your spaces, or anyone by their exact username.
  • Update button in the desktop app: when a new version is downloading you see its progress next to the window buttons, and one click restarts into it once it's ready. Settings → Check for updates checks any time.
  • The desktop app's own sign-in page, and no more setup window on first launch.

Improvements

  • Smoother everywhere: new messages slide in, reactions pop, buttons and spaces spring when you press them, and menus, dialogs and notifications glide in and out. Settings → Accessibility → Reduce motion turns it all off.
  • Encrypted messages that can't be recovered say so, instead of offering to fetch them from a device that can't read them either.

Fixes

  • No more freezes in long conversations: each new message, reaction or edit used to redraw every message on screen. A conversation with hundreds of messages loaded now updates about 25 times faster.

Update 14: community spaces and the Developer Portal

Version 14, 2026-10-07

New features

  • Community spaces: owners can turn on Community in Space settings → Overview. Community spaces are listed in Explore, where anyone can find and join them, and newcomers accept the rules before they write.
  • Explore: the + button has a new way in: browse community spaces and join them without an invite.
  • Feedback: Settings → Feedback lets you report bugs, suggest features and review The Hub, with a screenshot if you like, and shows what happens to each one.
  • Sign in with The Hub: apps and websites can let you sign in with your account, only with what you allow. Settings → Data and privacy lists them, and removes any of them.
  • Developer Portal: register apps and bots, set what your bot's invite link asks for, and read the API, at the-hub.coffee/developers.
  • Bot invite links: a link adds a bot to a space you manage, with the permissions it asks for (you can untick any of them).
  • Desktop app for Linux, next to Windows and macOS, and the desktop app now updates itself. Get it from the new download page.
  • Plugin developer mode: try a plugin from a folder on your computer, in your own browser only.
  • Encrypted messages on a new device: a device you add later can get your older encrypted messages from another of your devices. Both show the same code; say yes on the old one and they move over, still encrypted.
  • Move a call to this device: when you're in a call on another device or tab, the bar at the bottom offers Transfer here.
  • The Word of Wilson: /word of wilson <what they said> @user saves a quote for everyone on The Hub and posts it where you are. /word of wilson list searches them all, by quote, person or space.

Moderation

  • One permission per tool: Ban, Kick, Timeout, Mute and Warn members, Manage nicknames, Move and disconnect members, View moderation log and Manage moderation settings. Every role keeps what it could do before.
  • Moderation log channel: Moderation → Settings can post every moderation step in a channel for your moderators.
  • Commands follow the permissions: /purge and /slowmode need Manage messages; /lock, /unlock and /nuke need Manage channels; /move and /disconnect need Move and disconnect members.

Improvements

  • Download page: the website offers the right version for your computer, and the steps to install The Hub on your phone.
  • All commands in the list: typing / shows every command you can use, not only the first twelve.

Update 13: space moderation

Version 13, 2026-10-07

Space moderation

  • Moderation tab: Space settings has a new Moderation tab to warn, mute, time out, rename, remove and ban members, see each member's record, lift bans, and read the moderation log.
  • Ban, kick, mute and timeout: banned members can't come back until the ban is lifted. Muted members can read and listen but not write or speak. Timed out members can't open the space until the time is up.
  • Commands: moderators can do it all from the chat: /ban, /kick, /mute, /timeout, /warn, /warnings, /nick, /userinfo, /role, /purge, /slowmode, /lock, /nuke, /move, /disconnect and more. Type / to see the ones you can use, with a hint for each argument.
  • System replies: a command's result is posted by "[System]" and the space's name, with its icon. Errors are only shown to you.
  • Moderation log: every step, from the tab or the chat, is saved with who did it, to whom, the reason and the duration.
  • New permissions: Ban members and Moderate members. Roles that could remove members keep being able to do everything they did before.

New features

  • Custom emojis: make your own in Settings → Emojis, then use them in messages, reactions and your custom status.
  • Emoji autocomplete: type : and a name to see matching emojis before you send.
  • Emojis in custom status: add any emoji, your own ones too, from the emoji button.
  • Clip editor: after clipping, trim the clip on a timeline, listen to it, rename it, then save it or share it in a chat.
  • iPhone and iPad: add The Hub to your Home Screen from Safari to use it like an app, full screen, with push notifications (iOS 16.4 and later). Android and computers can install it too.
  • Community submissions: send your plugins and themes to the shop from Settings → Plugins. Once approved, plugins appear in the shop and themes under Community themes.
  • Community Dev badge: for people whose bot has been running for over a month, or whose plugin is used by 100 people.
  • Two new easter eggs. One of them needs a friend.

Improvements

  • Media filter: now off by default. Turn it on in Settings → Data and privacy. When it's on, pictures are checked faster.
  • Clear activity: an easy-to-find Clear activity button in Rich Presence and in your profile menu, and an empty name clears it too.
  • Stickers: pick the picture first, from your device or from pictures already shared in the space, see it in the preview, then name it. Big pictures are scaled down for you.
  • Who reacted: hover a reaction, or press and hold it on a phone, to see who reacted.
  • Icon library: space badges and roles share a new library of one-colour icons in categories (animals, gaming, music, food, nature, weapons, symbols), with search. A role's icon shows next to the role's name, in its colour.
  • Account age badge: a new look of its own, "Signal": a broadcast whose waves grow as your account gets older.
  • Phones: the message bar stays above the keyboard, menus and panels open as sheets along the bottom, buttons are bigger, press and hold for menus, swipe to reply or to open your channels and the member list, and a Data saver setting.
  • Faster start: the page draws before the voice library has finished downloading.

Bug fixes

  • Settings dialogs: dialogs opened from settings (deleting a role, for example) no longer open behind the settings page.
  • Channel name on phones: the channel's name shows in the header again.

Update 12

Version 12, 2026-10-06

Bug fixes

  • New Channel dialog: the Type picker renders properly again. Room showed a stray bar instead of a radio button, and the radio dots were out of line.
  • Moderator badge: moderator permissions are now recognised whether they come from an admin role or are given directly.
  • Voice moderation: moderators (Remove members) can move people between rooms and disconnect them from voice. Right-click someone in a room.
  • Editing messages: the edit box opens again when you edit a message.

Improvements

  • Image viewer: click anywhere outside an enlarged image to close it.
  • Voice timer: the time you've spent in a room now shows on the room itself, not only in the bottom bar.
  • Profile picture menu: fits the screen at every interface scale, with tidier sizing.
  • GIF panel: saved GIFs sit in a grid of columns instead of one long row.

Fun and social

  • A new easter egg: send "cora s'est fait token" and see what happens.
  • Rare ringtone: about 1 call in 3,333 rings with a special kawaii tune.
  • Voice Marathon badge: stay in a single voice call for 1,000 hours. Your progress is in Settings → Profile.
  • A secret in Profile settings: something new is hidden there. Persistence pays off.
  • DEV tag: a tag with its own icon for the people who build this Hub, given out by its owners. No space can make a DEV tag of its own.

Spaces and community

  • Custom invite links: admins can pick their space's own invite link in Space settings → Overview.
  • Import from Discord: Add a space → Import from Discord turns a Discord server template into a space, with its roles, categories and channels. You see a preview first.
  • Bots: make bots in Settings → Bots and add them to spaces from Space settings → Bots. They wear a BOT tag. The guide for bot makers is docs/BOTS.md.
  • Plugin shop: browse community plugins in Settings → Plugins. The person who runs this Hub installs them, and you choose which to turn on.

Notifications

  • Patch notes: when an update comes out you get a notice with a link to these notes. Find them any time under your profile menu → What's new.

Safety and security

  • End-to-end encrypted direct messages: messages and files in DMs are encrypted on your device and can only be read on your devices and the other person's. Not even the server can read them. Click the lock in a conversation to compare your safety number.
  • Sensitive media filter: explicit images and videos are blurred until you click, checked on your own device by a small AI model. Choose Off, Moderate or Strict in Settings → Data and privacy; a space can require a stricter level in its channels.
  • Mark as sensitive: before sending a file, mark it sensitive to blur it for everyone. Use it for anything the filter can't recognise, like violence or spoilers.
