Moderation
Spaces have their own moderation tools: bans, removals, mutes, timeouts, warnings and nicknames, a log of everything moderators did, and chat commands that do the same from the message bar. The Lounge has them too.
Every step is checked on the server (lib/moderation.php): the permission, the role order, and the arguments. The app only shows what you may do; it can't do more than the server allows.
Who can do what
| Permission | Lets someone |
|---|---|
| Ban members | Ban people and lift bans (/ban, /unban). |
| Kick members | Remove people from the space; they can come back with an invite (/kick). |
| Timeout members | Lock people out of the space for a while (/timeout, /untimeout). |
| Mute members | Stop people writing and speaking (/mute, /unmute). |
| Warn members | Warn people, and see and clear their warnings (/warn, /warnings, /clearwarnings). |
| Manage nicknames | Change what people are called in the space (/nick). |
| Manage roles | Give and take roles below their own highest role (/role). |
| Manage messages | Delete messages, purge and set slowmode (/purge, /slowmode). |
| Manage rooms and channels | Lock, unlock and nuke channels (/lock, /unlock, /nuke). |
| Move and disconnect members | Move people between rooms and take them out of voice (/move, /disconnect). |
| View moderation log | Read the log and members' records (/userinfo). |
| Manage moderation settings | Open the Moderation tab and choose the log channel. |
Moderators can only act on members whose highest role is below their own, and nobody can act on the space's owner. When these permissions were split up (update 14), every role kept everything it could do before.
What each step does
- Ban: removes the member and stops them coming back, even with an invite, until the ban is lifted.
- Remove (kick): removes the member. They can come back with an invite.
- Mute: they can still read and listen, but can't send messages or speak in rooms. Their mic is switched off on the server, and everyone else's app keeps them silent too. A mute can last up to 28 days, or until someone unmutes them.
- Timeout: they stay a member but can't open the space at all until the time is up (up to 28 days). They see a lock screen with the time left.
- Warn: saves a warning with a reason on their record in this space.
- Nickname: what they're called in this space only.
Mutes and timeouts stay in place if someone leaves the space and comes back.
The Moderation tab
Space settings → Moderation (with Manage moderation settings) has four views:
- Members: search by name, username or user ID, then warn, mute, time out, rename, remove or ban. The eye button opens someone's record: user ID, join date, roles, current mute or timeout, warnings and history.
- Bans: everyone banned, why and by whom, with a button to lift each ban. You can also ban by user ID, for someone who isn't in the space.
- Log: every moderation step, from the tab or from the chat: who did it, to whom, the reason and how long.
- Settings: a channel where every moderation step is also posted, for your moderators.
Commands
Type / in a space channel to see the commands you're allowed to use; after a command's name, a hint shows what to type next. Durations look like 30s, 10m, 1h, 1d, 2w or 1h30m (a plain number is minutes; for slowmode, seconds).
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/ban @user [reason] | Ban a member. |
/unban <user ID> | Lift a ban (a user ID or @username). |
/kick @user [reason] | Remove a member. |
/mute @user [duration] [reason] | Mute, for a while or until someone unmutes them. |
/unmute @user | End a mute. |
/timeout @user <duration> [reason] | Lock someone out of the space for a while. |
/untimeout @user | End a timeout early. |
/warn @user <reason> | Add a warning. |
/warnings @user | Show someone's warnings (only you see the answer). |
/clearwarnings @user | Clear someone's warnings. |
/nick @user <name> | Set a nickname; /nick @user reset puts their own name back. |
/userinfo @user | ID, join date, roles and moderation history (only you see the answer). |
/role add @user <role>, /role remove @user <role> | Give or take a role. |
/purge <amount> [@user] | Delete the last messages here (up to 100), or only one member's. |
/slowmode <duration>, /slowmode off | How often members can send a message here (up to 6 hours). |
/lock, /unlock | Stop or allow members writing here. Moderators can still write. |
/nuke | Recreate the channel empty, with the same name, place and settings. Asks first. |
/move @user <room> | Move someone to another room. |
/disconnect @user | Take someone out of voice. |
When a command works, the result is posted in the channel by [System] space name, with the space's icon: for example "@bob has been timed out for 1 hour. Reason: spam." When it doesn't (a missing permission, someone who isn't in the space, a duration that isn't one), only you see the reason, and the command goes back in the message bar to fix.
Every command, and every step from the Moderation tab, is saved in the moderation log.
For developers
Bots can use the same tools with mod_command and mod_action, within the permissions their roles give them: see the API reference.
